Turlock Unified School District

The mission of the Turlock Unified School District (TUSD), a premier progressive educational system, is to ensure all students graduate as self-motivated, responsible citizens equipped to compete successfully in an ever‐changing global society by delivering effective instruction that engages all students to reach their individual potential and highest achievements within a safe and caring student‐centered environment in partnership with our families and diverse community.

The Turlock Unified School District is a unified district and is governed by a seven member Board of Trustees, with the first election of Trustees by Trustee areas held November 2013.

TUSD continues implementation of California's new standards as we transition to higher expectations and shared accountability for student learning across all grade levels and subject areas.  Our staff continues to transition to the new standards with the “unpacking” and aligning of each to current instructional materials.  Most recently, TUSD adopted the Integrated Math Pathway which was implemented last year in grades 7-8 and in grade 9 for the 2015-16 school year with implementation of EngageNY in grades 7-8 and Math Visions Project for 9th.  A scaffold approach for teaching the new math standards will continue for incoming 9th graders, allowing students in grades 10-12 to complete their traditional math course of study.

Civility remains a vital part of TUSD's culture--a culture that has expanded throughout the community with local businesses, the City of Turlock, CSU, Stanislaus, and the Stanislaus County Office of Education.  TUSD will once again host the TUSD Festival on the Green  ~ Celebrating Character, Music, and the Performing Arts at Pitman High School on Saturday, March 19, 2016 in partnership with Turlock's Education Foundation, the community, and the City of Turlock.

All Turlock school sites remain on a traditional schedule.  Over 2,000 TUSD employees provide meaningful learning opportunities to our 13,896 students. The District includes nine elementary sites, one middle school and one junior high school, two large comprehensive high schools, one continuation high school, and one K-12 charter school. Class sizes average 24 students in grades transitional kindergarten through third. Class sizes for grades 4‐12 average approximately 32 students. Additionally, the District has one of the largest adult school programs in the Central Valley.

Walnut Elementary Education Center (2012), Pitman High School (2007), Dutcher Middle School (2005), and Dutcher Elementary School (2002) have been recognized as California Distinguished Schools. The District API for 2011‐12 is 780, a growth of 8 from the base of 772. Special programs include State Preschool programs at 2 elementary school campuses and Head Start programs at 4 elementary school campuses, and Set for Success (0‐5) serving students and families throughout the district. Curriculum options include a Charter School, a No Excuses University Program, a Transitional Kindergarten Program, Extended Day Kindergarten, a Two-Way Spanish Immersion Academy, Special Education Programs, a Math/Science Magnet Program, a Performing Arts Magnet, AVID Programs, ROP Programs, At-Risk and Credit Recovery on-line programs , a Bridge Program, a STEM Program, GATE and AP classes. A few of the many extra‐ and co-curricular options include NJROTC, athletics, music, performing arts, speech and debate, robotics, clubs and student leadership activities.  The District offers up-to-date technology to our students and staff through the newly-implemented 21st Century Technology Plan.

TUSD also offers an award-winning Child Nutrition Department, a highly trained Transportation Department, a growing Special Education Department, and an active Maintenance and Operations Staff working for the safety and cleanliness of our campuses.

During the 2008‐09 school year, more than 200 students, parents, teachers, classified employees, administrators and community members met over a course of six months to develop a Strategic Plan to drive budgeting and decision‐making in the TUSD over five years. The Strategic Plan is based on a set of mutually agreed‐upon beliefs that were created and used by a 30 member Planning Team in January 2009 to construct a mission statement and a set of objectives. The District is currently implementing District‐wide and school site activities which successfully implement this Strategic Plan.  Additionally, all of the school sites have completed site Strategic Plans which are aligned with the District Plan.
